dark history walking tours

discover salem's untold secrets

Murders. Tunnels. Opium Dens. Ghosts. The Dark Side of Salem, Oregon.

Step off the beaten path and uncover the stories Salem prefers to forget. Salem Haunt Club’s Dark History Walking Tours take you deep into the city’s forgotten past - where whispers echo through hidden tunnels, long-vanished buildings, and streets paved with secrets. This isn’t just a ghost tour. It’s a journey into the darker chapters of Salem’s history, told through the stories of real people, real tragedies, and real mysteries.

You'll explore the chilling legacy of the city’s underground tunnels - once filled with bootleggers, opium dens, and illegal pastimes. You’ll learn about the horrific mistreatment of Chinese immigrants, whose presence in Salem was sadly erased. You’ll walk over panes of mysterious purple glass embedded in the sidewalks, and uncover what they reveal about the forgotten city that once thrived below.

Along the way, we’ll share tales of grisly murders, the still-haunted halls of century-old buildings, and the grim history of the Salem Hanging Grounds. Whether you're a history buff, a fan of the paranormal, or just someone who loves uncovering secrets, this tour offers a glimpse into the side of Salem whispered about, but rarely told.

Spots are limited and tours fill quickly - so don’t wait too long to see Salem like you’ve never seen it before.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

what does my ticket include?

Each ticket includes entry to one Salem Haunt Club Dark History Walking Tour

how long is the tour?

Tours last approximately 45-60 minutes depending on group size and how many questions you ask (which we love!) Be on the lookout for extended tours & new locations in the future.

how much walking is involved?

We cover about .5 miles around 3 blocks at a relaxed pace with several stops along the way. Most of the route is on flat, paved sidewalks in downtown Salem.

where should i park?

You may park in the free parking lot used for events on the side of The Grand Theatre, in a downtown parking space, or in a parking garage.

do i need to buy tickets in advance?

Yes - advanced registration is strongly recommended. Tours often sell out, and walk-up availability is not guaranteed.

What should I wear?

Dress comfy! While we won't be walking too far, you'll still want to make sure you're dressed in comfortable shoes, and weather appropriate clothing as the tours are conducted outside.

what happens if it rains?

Tours are rain or shine! Please check the weather beforehand and be sure to dress appropriately for the occasion. In the event of rain, bring an umbrella and hooded jacket. Salem Haunt Club will have a few extra umbrellas for use as well.

Is this a ghost tour or a history tour?

Both! We blend true stories from Salem’s darker history (murders, underground tunnels, opium dens, mistreatment of Chinese immigrants) with documented hauntings and paranormal lore. It's creepy, informative, and sure to keep you up at night.

where do you get your information?

Our tours are written and curated by local event producer Chelsea Serpas, owner of Murders Incorporated (Murder Mystery Parties). Each stop on the tour is rooted in historical evidence, drawn from archived newspapers and local history books. The ghost stories are inspired by documented lore, long-standing legends, and first-hand accounts from the community.

is the tour kid-friendly?

This tour is best suited for ages 13 and up due to mature themes and unsettling stories. We don’t use jump scares or horror effects - just real, haunting history.

Please note: we will be discussing adult subjects such as murders, hangings, racism, the KKK, opium, brothels, and more. While children as young as 13 can join, please use parental discretion before signing minors up for the tour.

Can I bring my dog?

As fellow dog lovers, we totally understand wanting to bring your furry friend along. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on the tour, but we kindly ask that they remain quiet, calm, and under control throughout the experience. Excessive barking, pulling, or jumping can disrupt the storytelling and affect other guests' enjoyment. In the rare case of a major disruption, our guide may ask you to step away briefly to help preserve the experience for everyone. Thanks for helping us keep the tour enjoyable for all!

where do we meet?

Tour meeting places may vary per event, please check your ticket for more details.

Can we take photos and videos?

Absolutely - just no flash photography during storytelling moments. And if you capture a ghost, send it to us!

Can I bring a large group?

Please contact us directly for groups larger than 8 so that we can make sure we can fit you all together! We are also available to host private tours for birthdays or other events.
